Workshops

Workshops are capped at 30 participants on a competitive basis.

Machine Learning
Excel, Schrodinger Maestro, and other chemoinformatics gui solutions offer a multitude of prebuilt tools which are useful for analyzing chemical data interactively, but projects, protocols, and data can differ in unpredictable ways. RDKit offer precise, highly flexible control but can take time to learn and use to develop analysis scripts. The Jupyter notebook offers a middle ground, where you can build custom analysis interactively, simultaneously learning the API while probing your own data. This workshop will introduce you to the notebook and teach you how to parse molecular structures. You will learn how to analyze your data with RDKit, pandas, and sklearn and tensorflow. Finally, this workshop will cover how to design your own custom analysis. After creating supervised learning models, we will investigate methods of model interpretation. Laptop required.
Pitching your Idea
What is venture capital and why do you need it? What does a pre-seed startup need to think about? How do you build a pitch deck that will cut through the clutter? This workshop will give a broad overview of raising money for your idea. It will help you get started building a viable business plan around your idea, so you can turn idea into action.
Bioinformatics
Next generation sequencing (NGS) technology promises to advance medicine's understanding of the genetic basis of disease. This understanding is critical to the development of precision medicine, however, before one is able to extract meaningful signal from NGS data, one must robustly and reproducibly assess its quality and streamline its processing to an analysis ready format. Participants in the workshop will be introduced to a containerized software package that allows for automated and modularized assessment and processing of NGS data. The automated pipeline begins with URL ripping and ends with the generation of a NGS count file. All steps in the automated pipeline are accessible as independent modules and callable from command line. The software package requires minimal computational skills and is under MIT license. Laptop required.
3D Printing
Learn the fastest way to design a simple object with computer programs and how to use a basic 3D printer to print that object. This will be a hands-on workshop where the audience will follow along and make their own objects. Laptop required.
Piloting Data Products
How to build trust with data? How do you design the experience? How do you validate your prototype? How to get beyond that first pilot? This workshop introduce techniques to test and learn your way to a product that is usable, feasible and delivers value. Walk away knowing what you need to do next to validate your idea with your users and customers.
